Poul Kjaerholm Aluminium Chair drawing 1953

Price: On Application

Here is a very rare and desirable vintage Competition drawing poster displaying a 1953 prototype representation of the Aluminium chair by the Danish designer Poul Kjærholm. A detail of the poster is printed in the catalogue ‘The Furniture of Poul Kjaerholm, catalogue Raisonné, Michael Sheridan, page 40’. In 1953, the Danish Upholsterers’Guild sponsored a competetion for new types of upholstered chairs, and Poul Kjaerholm designed a samll lounge chair of bent aluminium upholstered on the inside of the shell. He and upholsterer Chris Sorensen made two prototypes and entered them into the competition, where they won first price. The chair was constructed of two pieces of bent aluminium: a curved seat with a deep flange along the lower edge and a curved section for the back. Both were padded with foam rubber and upholstered with cloth. Kjaerholm’s notes refer to textiles in black, yellow, blue- gray and red, a pelatte of colors that reflected his appreciation og Gerrit Rietveld’s design for inexpensive furniture. The chair was an important step forward in Kjaerholm’s technical development.
